George Russell Faces Setback in Japan as Frustration Impacts Race Outcome
George Russell experienced a challenging outing at the Japanese Grand Prix, missing out on a podium finish for the first time this season after a race that slipped away midway through.
Former driver Martin Brundle suggested that Russell appeared to lose focus during a crucial phase of the race as events began to turn against him.
Running near the front, Russell pitted from second place shortly before a safety car was triggered following a heavy crash. The timing proved costly, allowing Kimi Antonelli—who had not yet stopped—to take control of the race.
During the safety car period, Russell questioned his team over the radio about a possible position agreement. However, the situation did not unfold in his favor.
At the restart, Russell struggled and was quickly put under pressure, losing ground as rivals closed in. A lack of optimal energy deployment left him vulnerable.
He ultimately finished in fourth place, ending his podium streak and dropping to second in the championship standings.
With an upcoming break before the next race, Russell now has an opportunity to reset and come back stronger, as competition intensifies at the front of the grid.
