A Formula 1 driver experienced a frightening moment when their car became airborne and the steering wheel detached during the incident.

The 2011 Malaysian Grand Prix featured one of the strangest incidents in modern Formula 1, when Renault driver Vitaly Petrov suffered a violent landing after his car suddenly launched into the air.

During the race at Sepang International Circuit, Sebastian Vettel controlled the event from the front, comfortably winning the second round of the season. However, much of the attention shifted to Petrov’s dramatic accident late in the race.

On lap 52, Petrov ran wide at Turn 8 after losing grip on loose debris off the racing line. As he attempted to return to the track, his car struck a drainage bump, which launched it into the air. The impact from landing caused severe damage, particularly to the steering system, immediately ending his race while he was running in eighth place.

The force of the landing was so intense that the steering mechanism failed, leaving the wheel detached in Petrov’s hands. Reflecting afterward, he admitted he expected a bump—but nothing close to the scale of what actually happened.

Race Summary

Out front, Vettel secured victory with a margin of just over three seconds ahead of Jenson Button. Renault also celebrated a strong result, with Nick Heidfeld finishing third and earning the team its 100th podium in Formula 1.

Tyre management played a key role due to challenging conditions, with leading drivers opting for three pit stops. Button stood out by carefully managing his tyres, completing a long final stint on the harder compound.

Heidfeld successfully held off pressure from Mark Webber, whose alternative four-stop strategy was not enough to reach the podium.

Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton experienced a difficult race, dropping from second on the grid to eighth as his performance faded over time.

Petrov’s retirement was officially recorded as an accident, bringing an abrupt end to what had been a strong points-scoring drive before the dramatic failure.
